Personal bereavement is probably one of the most difficult events anyone can face. It can be especially difficult if the deceased was the main provider and decision maker. To face the future after such a devastating personal loss is difficult enough, let alone having to deal with all the future financial decisions.

At this stage clients often feel very vulnerable. With the subject of ill-health so close to hand they are probably extremely concerned about what alternatives there are to protect their family’s future. Managing the family assets can be a difficult challenge especially if the risk of each particular investment and of the assets as a whole is not sufficiently understood. Risk profiles need to be examined, time horizons and lifestyle objectives adjusted to take into account the unfortunate change in circumstances.

Future income and capital needs must be identified and investment strategies aligned to meet them. Wills, trusts and inheritance plans need to be reassessed to ensure sufficient capital is available to meet future needs and the remainder of the estate is dispersed to maximise the return to the dependents and minimise the return to the taxman.

This process needs to be conducted sensitively and expertly with a trusted partner.

We are experienced in dealing with recently bereaved clients. We understand their worries and concerns and will work with them in a sensitive and pragmatic manner to ensure their future interest and wishes are secured.

We will evaluate the existing estate and ascertain the immediate needs and requirements of the client. We will need to identify their immediate and future income and capital requirements and the relevant time horizons. After ascertaining and explaining the nature of the investment risks involved, appropriate investment strategies will be put into place.

We will review the current will and inheritance structure, often in conjunction with the family solicitor to ensure the capital provision is adequate and tax efficiency maximised. The relationship will be ongoing – to ensure the client’s needs and personal concerns remain paramount in the ongoing management of their financial affairs.
